Which rainforest snake has the longest fangs of any snake?

The story behind the answer

The Gaboon viper has the longest fangs of any snake, with exceptionally large teeth used to inject venom into prey.

Bitis gabonica is native to the rainforests and woodlands of sub-Saharan Africa. Its broad head, heavy body, and intricate brown, cream, and purple pattern provide remarkable camouflage among fallen leaves. It usually waits motionless for prey rather than actively chasing it.

The species has hinged front fangs that fold against the roof of the mouth when the jaws are closed. Its venom can cause severe tissue damage, but the snake is generally calm and reluctant to move unless disturbed.

Gaboon vipers are ambush predators that eat rodents, birds, and other small animals. They are sometimes confused with related rhinoceros vipers, which have more prominent horn-like scales above the nose.
