Which rainforest marsupial is the only tree-kangaroo native to Papua New Guinea’s Huon Peninsula?

The story behind the answer

Matschie’s tree-kangaroo is a rainforest marsupial native to Papua New Guinea’s Huon Peninsula and nearby mountain forests.

Unlike ground-dwelling kangaroos, it has strong forelimbs, flexible ankles, and a long tail adapted for climbing. It can descend tree trunks headfirst and move through branches, but it also comes to the ground to feed.

Its diet includes leaves, fruit, flowers, and other plant material. The species has a dark body, reddish-brown limbs, and a pale belly, with individual variation in colour.

Matschie’s tree-kangaroo is threatened by hunting and the conversion or degradation of forest. It is sometimes confused with Goodfellow’s tree-kangaroo, which occupies other parts of New Guinea and has different range markings.
