Which rainforest mammal is the world’s smallest species of otter?

The story behind the answer

The Asian small-clawed otter is the world’s smallest otter species.

This compact otter lives in freshwater wetlands, streams, rice fields, mangroves, and forested waterways across South and Southeast Asia. It is especially adapted to shallow water and muddy edges, where it searches for crabs, snails, frogs, and other small prey.

Its front paws have reduced claws that do not extend beyond the digits, giving the species its common name. Sensitive fingers help it handle prey, while partially webbed feet support swimming. It is more comfortable foraging with its paws than many larger otters.

Asian small-clawed otters are social and often live in family groups. Habitat loss, wetland conversion, pollution, and illegal capture for the pet trade have affected populations. The species is classified as vulnerable and remains dependent on healthy tropical wetlands.
