Which rainforest mammal is the longest member of the weasel family?
Answer
Giant otter
Answer
Giant otter
The giant otter is the longest member of the weasel family.
This social South American mammal lives in slow-moving rivers, oxbow lakes, and wetlands associated with Amazonian and other tropical forests. Adults can reach about 1.8 metres in length, including the tail. They have streamlined bodies, webbed feet, and sensitive whiskers adapted to hunting in murky water.
Giant otters usually live in family groups and communicate with a varied repertoire of whistles, chirps, and other sounds. Fish make up most of their diet, although they also take crustaceans and other aquatic animals.
The species was heavily affected by hunting for its dense fur during the twentieth century. Habitat degradation, mercury contamination, and conflicts connected with fishing remain important threats. Giant otters are now protected across much of their range.
