Which rainforest mammal is famous for its golden coat and white facial markings in Brazil’s Atlantic Forest?

The story behind the answer

The golden lion tamarin is famous for its golden coat and white facial markings in Brazil’s Atlantic Forest.

This small primate is endemic to Brazil’s Atlantic Forest, a habitat that has been heavily reduced and fragmented. Its name refers to the mane-like fur around its face and neck, which gives the animal a miniature lion-like appearance.

Golden lion tamarins live in family groups and eat fruit, flowers, nectar, insects and small vertebrates. They are active in the canopy but also use tree hollows and dense vegetation for shelter. Cooperative breeding is important: group members help carry and care for infants.

Conservation programs helped bring the species back from the brink of extinction, although habitat loss, disease and fragmentation remain serious threats. The golden-headed lion tamarin is a different Brazilian species with a gold-colored head rather than an all-golden body.
