Which rainforest mammal is also called the honey bear?
Answer
Kinkajou
Answer
Kinkajou
The kinkajou is a rainforest mammal also called the honey bear, although it is not a bear and is more closely related to raccoons.
Potos flavus lives in tropical forests from southern Mexico through Central America and into much of South America. It is nocturnal and spends most of its life in the canopy. A long, prehensile tail helps it balance and may act as an extra support while it moves among branches.
Kinkajous eat fruit, nectar, flowers, insects, and occasionally small vertebrates. Their flexible tongues help them reach nectar inside flowers, making them useful pollinators for some plants. The common name “honey bear” refers to their fondness for sweet foods and their rounded appearance, not to a close relationship with bears. Kinkajous are often confused with olingos or coatis, but their nocturnal habits, rounded head, large eyes, and strongly prehensile tail are distinctive.
