Which rainforest is the second-largest tropical rainforest after the Amazon?
Answer
Congo rainforest
Answer
Congo rainforest
The Congo rainforest is the second-largest tropical rainforest after the Amazon.
It lies in the Congo Basin of central Africa and spreads across several countries, with the Democratic Republic of the Congo containing the largest area. Other countries in the region include the Republic of the Congo, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Gabon and Equatorial Guinea.
The forest supports major populations of forest elephants, western lowland gorillas, bonobos and chimpanzees. Its rivers and wetlands also form one of the world’s most important freshwater systems. The Congo Basin’s peatlands store exceptionally large quantities of carbon, making their protection significant for the global climate.
“Congo rainforest” is a broad geographic term rather than the name of one national park. It is also distinct from the Congo Basin as a whole, because the basin includes savannas, rivers and other ecosystems beyond dense rainforest.
