Which rainforest frog is the world’s largest living frog?

The story behind the answer

The goliath frog is the world’s largest living frog, reaching exceptional size in the rainforests of Cameroon and Equatorial Guinea.

Conraua goliath can grow to about 30 centimetres in snout-to-vent length, with its legs extended making it much longer. Some individuals weigh more than 3 kilograms. It lives beside fast-flowing rivers and waterfalls, where clean, oxygen-rich water is important for reproduction and survival.

Unlike many frogs, the goliath frog does not have a vocal sac and is not known for producing a loud mating call. It is also unusual because adults lack a tympanum, the external eardrum commonly visible behind a frog’s eye. The species is threatened by habitat loss, hunting, and collection for the international pet trade. Its range is much smaller than that of many famous rainforest frogs, making protection of its river habitat especially important.
