Which rainforest frog has transparent skin that can reveal its internal organs?

The story behind the answer

The glass frog is a rainforest frog with translucent skin that can reveal internal organs.

Glass frogs belong to the family Centrolenidae and are native to Central and South America. Many species are small, green frogs that live in vegetation beside fast-flowing streams. Their transparent or translucent undersides can make the heart, liver, and digestive tract visible from below.

This transparency is especially striking when the frog is resting on a leaf. Scientists have also studied the frogs’ translucent tissues as an example of camouflage, because their bodies may cast less obvious shadows than those of more opaque animals.

Glass frogs are not the same as glasswing butterflies, whose transparent wings produce the similar common name. Nor are all glass frog species equally transparent; the degree varies among species and body regions.
