Which rainforest bird is the national bird of Belize?
Answer
Keel-billed toucan
Answer
Keel-billed toucan
The keel-billed toucan is the national bird of Belize.
Belize adopted the brightly colored keel-billed toucan as its national bird because the species is strongly associated with the country’s tropical forests. It is also found across parts of southern Mexico, Central America, and northern South America.
The toucan’s huge bill is green, orange, red, and blue. Despite its size, the bill is relatively light because it is constructed from a keratin-covered framework with internal supports. The bird uses it to reach fruit and manipulate food.
Keel-billed toucans eat mainly fruit but also take insects, eggs, lizards, and small nestlings. They nest in tree cavities and often roost with several birds crowded into one hollow.
