Which rainforest bird is the largest living toucan species?
Answer
Toco toucan
Answer
Toco toucan
The toco toucan is the largest living toucan species.
Toco toucans inhabit open woodland, savanna, gallery forest, and rainforest edges across central and eastern South America. Their huge orange bill makes them instantly recognizable, but the bill is surprisingly lightweight because it has a honeycomb-like internal structure. It helps with feeding, display, and regulating heat.
The bird eats fruit, insects, eggs, and small vertebrates. Its tongue is long and narrow, with a brush-like tip suited to manipulating food. Toco toucans nest in natural tree cavities rather than building elaborate nests, and both parents help care for the young.
Although the toco toucan is strongly associated with tropical rainforest imagery, it is not restricted to deep forest. It often uses more open habitats than several other toucan species. Its distinctive silhouette has made it a common symbol in wildlife art, advertising, and conservation campaigns.
