Which rainforest bird is the largest eagle in the Americas?
Answer
Harpy eagle
Answer
Harpy eagle
The harpy eagle is the largest eagle in the Americas. Its scientific name is Harpia harpyja, and it is one of the most powerful raptors in the world by body mass and talon strength.
Harpy eagles inhabit mature tropical forests from southern Mexico through Central America and into South America. Their broad wings help them maneuver through forest openings, while their long crest and large talons are suited to hunting arboreal mammals such as sloths and monkeys. They usually need extensive, connected forest to breed successfully.
The species is sometimes confused with the Philippine eagle, another enormous forest eagle, but the Philippine eagle is native to the Philippines. Harpy eagles are also not the world’s largest eagle by every measurement; different species lead in length, wingspan, or mass. Their importance comes from their exceptional combination of size, power, and rainforest specialization.
