Which railroad company's 1901 stock-corner battle helped trigger the Panic of 1901 on U.S. exchanges?

The story behind the answer

Northern Pacific Railway was the company at the center of the 1901 stock-corner battle that helped trigger the Panic of 1901.

Financier E. H. Harriman attempted to gain control of Northern Pacific, while James J. Hill and J. P. Morgan supported a rival buying campaign. Speculators rushed to purchase shares, driving Northern Pacific's price sharply upward and creating a severe shortage of available stock.

When the struggle eased, Northern Pacific shares collapsed from their inflated level. The turmoil spread to other securities and contributed to a broad market panic, although the episode was shorter and less economically destructive than the Panic of 1893.

Northern Pacific is sometimes confused with Union Pacific because both were major western railroads involved in consolidation battles. The panic also encouraged the creation of Northern Securities, a holding company later challenged by the U.S. government under antitrust law.
