Which race awards the famous green jacket to its men’s wheelchair division winner?

The story behind the answer

The Boston Marathon awards its famous green jacket to the men’s wheelchair division winner.

The Boston Athletic Association introduced the tradition in 1975, when Bob Hall became the first official wheelchair division winner. Hall had received permission to complete the course in 1974, finishing in 2:58:00. The following year, Boston formally recognized a wheelchair division.

The division helped establish wheelchair racing as a major part of road-racing culture. Ernst Van Dyk of South Africa became one of its most successful competitors, winning Boston many times in the handcycle wheelchair division.

The jacket is associated with Boston’s broader tradition of recognizing champions. It is not the same as the green jacket awarded at the Masters golf tournament, and the wheelchair division uses specialized racing chairs rather than ordinary wheelchairs. The race also includes women’s wheelchair, handcycle, and other adaptive categories.
