The queen who became the de facto ruler of Naranjo in 682 was Lady Six Sky. She arrived from Dos Pilas to establish a new dynasty and became one of the most powerful women in Classic Maya history.

Lady Six Sky was the daughter of Bʼalaj Chan Kʼawiil, the ruler of Dos Pilas. Her arrival strengthened the alliance linking Dos Pilas and Calakmul with Naranjo, which had suffered political upheaval after conflict with Caracol. Although inscriptions suggest she was never formally invested with Naranjo’s emblem glyph, she performed the essential duties of a ruler.

She commissioned monuments, conducted calendrical ceremonies, directed warfare, and presented herself in warrior imagery. In 693, her young son Kʼakʼ Tiliw Chan Chaak became king, and she acted as his regent. Naranjo then launched successful campaigns against rivals including Tikal and Ucanal.
