The Qianlong Emperor (1711–1799) ruled from 1735 to 1796 and remained the effective power behind the throne until his death. He was a major patron of literature, painting, calligraphy, antiquities, and imperial workshops. His collecting expanded the Qing court’s holdings of paintings, bronzes, jade, ceramics, seals, and historic calligraphy.
Qianlong was also an active writer and calligrapher. He frequently added poems, inscriptions, and seals to works in the imperial collection, treating them as objects for appreciation but also as statements of imperial authority. His study, the Hall of Three Rarities, housed celebrated calligraphic works associated with Wang Xizhi, Wang Xianzhi, and Wang Xun.
