Which Puerto Rican salsa band is nicknamed 'La Universidad de la Salsa'?
Answer
El Gran Combo
Answer
El Gran Combo
El Gran Combo is the Puerto Rican salsa band nicknamed “La Universidad de la Salsa.”
The nickname, meaning “The University of Salsa,” reflects the orchestra’s role as a training ground for major singers and musicians. Founded in 1962 by pianist and bandleader Rafael Ithier, the group grew out of the earlier Cortijo orchestra tradition and became one of Puerto Rico’s defining salsa institutions.
The name can be confused with Fania All-Stars, a celebrated ensemble associated with New York’s Fania record label, or La Sonora Ponceña, another important Puerto Rican orchestra. Neither is the standard answer to this nickname. El Gran Combo is also known by the aliases “El Combo” and “Los Mulatos del Sabor.”
Its long career, international touring, and succession of prominent performers—including Andy Montañez and Pellín Rodríguez—help explain why the educational metaphor became so enduring. The group’s 1983 album Universidad de la Salsa reinforced the association.
