The original public lectures behind Feynman’s book QED were the Sir Douglas Robb lectures. Feynman delivered the four lectures at the University of Auckland in New Zealand in 1979, presenting quantum electrodynamics to a broad audience.

The book, QED: The Strange Theory of Light and Matter, was published in 1985 by Princeton University Press and was transcribed and edited by Ralph Leighton. Its aim was unusual for popular science: it introduced enough mathematics for readers to follow elementary quantum-electrodynamics calculations while keeping the exposition conversational.

Feynman explains photons, reflection and transmission, alternative paths, electrons, and the interaction rules later associated with his diagrams. One memorable teaching device imagines tiny clocks attached to particles, using their changing phases to make complex amplitudes more intuitive.
