Which pseudonym did J.K. Rowling use for her first published crime novel?

The story behind the answer

J.K. Rowling used the pseudonym Robert Galbraith for her first published crime novel. The book, The Cuckoo’s Calling, appeared in 2013.

The novel introduces private investigator Cormoran Strike and his temporary secretary, Robin Ellacott. It was initially presented as the work of an unknown former military investigator named Robert Galbraith. Rowling’s identity became public after a Sunday Times investigation connected her to the book.

“Robert” was chosen partly in tribute to political leader Robert F. Kennedy, while “Galbraith” was inspired by a name associated with Rowling’s childhood. The pseudonym is sometimes mistaken for a character, but Robert Galbraith is the author name used on the series’ covers. Rowling has continued publishing later Strike novels under that name.
