Which proposed operation was planned as the second stage of the Allied invasion of Japan?
Answer
Operation Coronet
Answer
Operation Coronet
Operation Coronet was planned as the second stage of the proposed Allied invasion of Japan.
Coronet was intended to follow Operation Olympic, the planned assault on southern Kyushu. It would have targeted the Kanto Plain on Honshu, Japan’s largest island, with the objective of advancing toward Tokyo. The tentative starting date was March 1, 1946.
Coronet was part of Operation Downfall, the overall Allied plan for invading the Japanese home islands. It was expected to be exceptionally large, requiring many American divisions and additional Commonwealth forces. The planned landing area was strategically important because control of the Kanto Plain would threaten Japan’s political and administrative center.
Japan’s surrender in August 1945 meant that Coronet never occurred. It is distinct from Operation Olympic, which was scheduled first, and from Operation Overlord, the 1944 invasion of Normandy. These similarly named operations belong to different campaigns.
