Jeremiah had repeatedly warned that Judah would fall because of its rebellion and urged the people to surrender to the Babylonians. Officials in King Zedekiah’s court considered that message demoralizing and persuaded the king to hand Jeremiah over to them.

The officials lowered Jeremiah into the cistern of Malchiah, located in the courtyard of the guard. The cistern contained no water but did contain mud, and Jeremiah sank into it. An Ethiopian court official named Ebed-melech courageously appealed to the king, gathered men and ropes, and pulled Jeremiah out before he died of hunger.

The story is recorded in Jeremiah 38 and illustrates the prophet’s political isolation during the final years of the kingdom of Judah. Jeremiah was not rescued by Daniel, Ezekiel, or Isaiah: Daniel’s best-known ordeal involved a lions’ den, while Ezekiel and Isaiah belong to different prophetic settings. Jeremiah later remained in Jerusalem for a time, despite the city’s destruction.
