Isa was the prophet born to Mary without a father, according to Islamic belief. Isa is the Arabic name for Jesus, whom Muslims regard as a major prophet, messenger, and the Messiah.
The Qur'anic birth story says that Maryam (Mary) was chosen and honored by God. The angel Jibril (Gabriel) announced that she would have a son despite having no husband or having been touched by any man. Isa's birth is therefore understood in Islam as a miracle brought about by God's command, not as evidence that Isa was divine.
Islam gives Isa an important place among God's messengers. He is associated with the Injil, or Gospel, and is credited with miracles by God's permission, including healing and raising the dead. The Qur'an also describes him speaking while still an infant in defense of his mother.
A major difference from mainstream Christianity is that Islam rejects the doctrine that Jesus is God's son or part of a Trinity. Muslims honor Isa deeply but worship God alone. Another common mix-up is with Adam: Adam was also created without a father, but Isa is the prophet specifically associated with a miraculous birth from Mary.
