Which prophet was a herdsman and a dresser of sycamore trees?

The story behind the answer

The prophet who was a herdsman and a dresser of sycamore trees was Amos.

Amos identifies himself this way in Amos 7:14, during his confrontation with Amaziah, the priest of Bethel. Amos says he was not a professional prophet or a member of a prophetic family; instead, he worked as a herdsman and tended sycamore trees or sycamore figs. The statement emphasizes that his prophetic mission came through God’s call rather than through an established religious occupation.

Amos was from Tekoa, a town in Judah south of Jerusalem, but he preached primarily to the northern kingdom of Israel. He was active during the reign of Jeroboam II of Israel and the reign of Uzziah of Judah, in the first half of the eighth century BCE.

The sycamore in this passage is the Mediterranean sycamore fig, not the North American or European maple commonly called a sycamore. “Dresser” may refer to cultivating or tending the trees and their fruit. Amos is especially remembered for condemning exploitation, inequality, and empty worship.
