Isa is the prophet believed in Islam to return to earth before the Day of Judgment. Muslims identify Isa with Jesus, whom Islam honors as a prophet and messenger of God, the Messiah, and the son of Maryam.
According to widely accepted Islamic tradition, Isa was not ultimately killed or crucified. God raised him, and he will return near the end of time. His descent is associated with the defeat of the false messiah, al-Masih al-Dajjal, and with a period of justice before the final events of the Last Day.
The Quran describes Isa's raising and speaks of signs connected with the Hour, while detailed accounts of his return are developed especially in hadith literature. Interpretations differ over some details, including the chronology and symbolism of end-time events, but the identity of the returning prophet is not normally confused with Muhammad or Idris. Isa's return also differs from Christian formulations of the Second Coming because Islamic theology places him within the chain of human prophets and rejects his divinity.
