Ipswich Town opened its 2026–27 Premier League campaign at home to Sunderland.
The match was played at Portman Road on Saturday 22 August 2026. Ipswich won 2–1, giving the club three points in its first match back in the Premier League.
Ipswich were one of three promoted clubs for the season, together with Coventry City and Hull City. The club’s return followed a one-year absence from the top flight, making its opening fixture a relatively quick comeback compared with Coventry’s 25-year wait.
Sunderland were also returning to the Premier League, but Ipswich claimed the points in this meeting between two clubs with recent promotion stories. The result made Ipswich the second promoted side to win during the opening round, after Hull City’s 2–0 victory over Manchester United.
