Which programming language reached its first stable 1.0 release in 2015 after being sponsored by Mozilla?

The story behind the answer

Rust reached its first stable 1.0 release in 2015 after Mozilla sponsored its development.

Graydon Hoare created Rust around 2006, and Mozilla became involved in the project in 2009. Rust was designed for systems programming, where performance, predictable resource use, and memory safety are important. Its ownership and borrowing rules allow the compiler to detect many memory errors without requiring a conventional garbage collector.

Rust 1.0 was released on May 15, 2015. The milestone marked the beginning of a stable release series rather than the language’s invention. Rust has since been used in operating-system components, browsers, command-line tools, embedded software, and network services.

A common mix-up is treating Mozilla as Rust’s sole creator. Hoare initiated the language, while Mozilla provided major sponsorship and development support. Rust is also distinct from Go: both target practical systems and network programming, but their memory-management models differ substantially.
