Which producer worked with Metallica on the recording of The Black Album?

The story behind the answer

Bob Rock produced Metallica’s 1991 album, widely known as The Black Album.

Rock was known for production work with artists including Mötley Crüe, Aerosmith, Bon Jovi, and the Cult. Metallica had been impressed by his work on Mötley Crüe’s 1989 album Dr. Feelgood and decided to hire him for their next record.

The collaboration was demanding. Rock pushed the band to record more collaboratively, encouraged live performances in the studio, and asked James Hetfield to strengthen the lyrics. The group’s perfectionism led to repeated takes and frequent arguments during production.

Rock also helped shape the album’s more polished and spacious sound. He raised the prominence of Jason Newsted’s bass, which had been difficult to hear on ...And Justice for All, and supported the band’s move toward shorter, more direct songs.

The recording experience was so stressful that Rock briefly said he would never work with Metallica again. Despite that tension, he remained the band’s producer on later albums, including Load and Reload.
