Bob Rock is credited alongside James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich as a producer of Metallica's 1991 album.
The album's production credits reflect an unusual division of responsibilities. Rock served as the outside producer, while Hetfield and Ulrich represented the band's own creative and performance leadership. The arrangement followed a period in which the band wanted a stronger, more polished recording approach without abandoning its heaviness.
Rock's role went beyond supervising the final mix. He challenged the musicians to perform collaboratively, encouraged layered or harmonic vocals, and helped bring Jason Newsted's bass into a more audible role. These choices contributed to the record's fuller, more accessible sound.
The three credited producers should not be confused with the four performing members of Metallica on the album: Hetfield, Ulrich, Kirk Hammett, and Newsted. Bob Rock was not a member of the recording lineup, although he later performed bass with the band during the St. Anger period.
