The Prince album released as a free covermount with The Mail on Sunday in 2007 was Planet Earth.
Prince’s management arranged for the album to accompany the newspaper’s 15 July 2007 edition in the United Kingdom. A covermount is a CD or other item attached to a magazine or newspaper, allowing readers to receive it as part of the publication rather than buying a conventional album release.
The unusual deal caused controversy among British record retailers. Sony BMG declined to distribute the album normally in the UK, while HMV stocked copies of the newspaper because it was effectively the only way customers could obtain the CD. Prince also gave Planet Earth to fans attending his 2007 concerts at London’s O2 Arena.
The album was Prince’s 32nd studio album and included “Guitar,” “The One U Wanna C” and “Future Baby Mama.” It was released internationally through more conventional channels, including the United States on 24 July 2007. Its newspaper giveaway is sometimes confused with Prince’s later or earlier promotional distributions, including the copies of Musicology supplied to concertgoers in 2004.
