Which primate is also called the black crested macaque and is native to Sulawesi?
Answer
Celebes crested macaque
Answer
Celebes crested macaque
The primate also called the black crested macaque is the Celebes crested macaque, Macaca nigra, native mainly to northern Sulawesi.
Its dramatic appearance explains several of its names. The macaque has nearly jet-black fur, a bare dark face, reddish-brown eyes, and a distinctive crest of hair on its head. It is also called the Sulawesi crested macaque, the crested black macaque, or locally yaki. “Celebes” is the older European name for Sulawesi, so the common names refer to the same island.
Celebes crested macaques are diurnal rainforest animals and spend more than 60 percent of their day on the ground, foraging and socializing. Fruit makes up about 70 percent of their diet, supplemented by leaves, seeds, insects, eggs, and other small prey. Groups commonly contain five to 25 animals, though larger groups can reach 75.
The species is critically endangered. Hunting, crop conflict, and forest clearing have sharply reduced its original range. A non-native population also exists on Bacan Island, but Sulawesi is its natural homeland.
