Which president signed Executive Order 10834, establishing the design of the current 50-star U.S. flag?

The story behind the answer

President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed Executive Order 10834, establishing the design of the current 50-star U.S. flag, on August 21, 1959.

The order followed the admission of Alaska and Hawaii, which made a 50-star arrangement necessary. The new flag placed the stars in nine rows alternating between five and six stars, while retaining the traditional 13 stripes.

The 50-star flag first flew officially on July 4, 1960, at Fort McHenry in Baltimore. It remains the longest-used version of the U.S. flag, surpassing the previous 48-star design in 2007.

A popular story credits Ohio student Robert G. Heft with designing the 50-star flag for a school project. Heft's submission closely resembled the final design, but the official executive order credits the federal design process rather than naming him as the official designer.
