Which president appeared alongside George Washington on the 1926 U.S. Sesquicentennial half dollar?

The story behind the answer

Calvin Coolidge appeared alongside George Washington on the 1926 U.S. Sesquicentennial half dollar.

The coin commemorated the 150th anniversary of American independence. Its obverse showed jugate, or paired, portraits of Washington and Coolidge, while its reverse displayed the Liberty Bell. Coolidge was president when the coin was issued, making the design both a historical commemoration and a representation of the contemporary administration.

The 1926 coinage program also included a quarter eagle, a $2.50 gold coin. That coin featured Liberty on the obverse and an eagle on the reverse. Both pieces were struck at the Philadelphia Mint without mint marks.

The appearance of a living president was unusual because U.S. coin tradition generally avoided depicting living presidents. The 1926 half dollar is therefore an important predecessor to later anniversary coin programs, including those associated with America250.
