Sulfur hexafluoride is the potent greenhouse gas used to insulate some electrical switchgear.

Sulfur hexafluoride, written SF₆, is a colorless, nonflammable gas with unusually high dielectric strength. Under pressure, it insulates conductors and helps prevent electrical breakdown in gas-insulated switchgear and high-voltage circuit breakers. Its high electronegativity and density also help quench arcs when a breaker opens.

The technology became important in high-voltage grids from the 1950s onward because SF₆ equipment can be compact, sealed, and less vulnerable to pollution or weather than some air-insulated designs. Gas-insulated installations are especially useful where space is limited, including indoor substations.

The environmental trade-off is significant. SF₆ is extremely stable in the atmosphere and has a very long atmospheric lifetime; its 100-year global-warming potential is roughly 23,500 times that of carbon dioxide. It is used in relatively small quantities, but leaks during manufacture, servicing, and disposal matter. This is why utilities and regulators increasingly pursue leak prevention, recycling, and lower-impact alternatives.
