Which Porsche SUV model was the brand's first, launched in 2002?

The Porsche Cayenne was Porsche’s first SUV model, launched in 2002. Its arrival marked a major expansion beyond the company’s traditional sports cars and grand tourers.

The first-generation Cayenne, known internally as the Type 9PA or E1, was developed alongside the Volkswagen Touareg. It used a front-engine, four-wheel-drive layout and offered performance-focused versions such as the V8-powered Cayenne S and Cayenne Turbo. The model entered production in August 2002.

The Cayenne was also Porsche’s first production vehicle with four doors and its first modern off-road vehicle, although Porsche had built agricultural tractors decades earlier. Its success helped finance and broaden the company’s later model strategy.

A common mix-up is the Macan: that smaller SUV arrived in 2014, twelve years after the Cayenne. The Taycan is electric, while the Panamera is a four-door car, not an SUV.
