Porsche announced the Macan development project in 2010 and unveiled the production version at the 2013 Los Angeles and Tokyo motor shows. European sales began in spring 2014, while the United States received it as a 2015 model-year vehicle. The initial range included the Macan S and Macan Turbo.

The name Macan comes from the Indonesian word for “tiger,” reflecting Porsche’s preference for names associated with strength and movement. Before its launch, the vehicle was widely known by the internal project name Cajun, derived from “Cayenne Junior.”

Although the Macan shares engineering with the first-generation Audi Q5, including its platform and wheelbase, Porsche gave it distinct styling, tuning, and performance characteristics. The Cayenne remains the larger Porsche SUV. The BMW X3 and Audi Q5 are rival vehicles, not alternative names for the Macan.
