Which Popeye character is famous for loving hamburgers?

The story behind the answer

J. Wellington Wimpy is the Popeye character famous for loving hamburgers. Usually called simply Wimpy, he is a soft-spoken, scheming moocher whose appetite for burgers became one of his defining traits.

E. C. Segar introduced Wimpy in the Popeye comic strip, originally titled Thimble Theatre, in 1931. His best-known line is the politely evasive request, “I’ll gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today,” which captures both his fondness for hamburgers and his habit of borrowing money for them.

Wimpy is sometimes confused with Popeye’s other supporting characters. Eugene the Jeep is a magical animal, Swee’Pea is Popeye’s adopted child, and Bluto is generally portrayed as Popeye’s rival. Wimpy’s burger obsession was so recognizable that the international Wimpy restaurant chain took its name from him.
