Which political faction, led by Brissot, was purged from the National Convention in June 1793?

The story behind the answer

The political faction led by Brissot that was purged from the National Convention in June 1793 was the Girondins. They were a loosely connected group of revolutionary deputies, many originally associated with the département of Gironde in southwestern France.

The Girondins supported the Revolution, republican government, and war against Austria, but they increasingly opposed the radical Montagnards and the growing political power of Paris. Their rivalry intensified over the king’s trial, economic controls, revolutionary violence, and whether France should be governed from the capital or with greater provincial influence.

On May 31–June 2, 1793, an armed uprising led by Parisian militants and the National Guard surrounded the Convention. Twenty-two Girondin deputies were detained, effectively removing the faction from power. Many later went on trial and were executed in October 1793. The Jacobins were their main rivals, not the name of the purged faction itself.
