Which Polish university did Nicolaus Copernicus attend?
Answer
Jagiellonian University
Answer
Jagiellonian University
Nicolaus Copernicus attended the University of Kraków, now known as Jagiellonian University. He studied there from 1491 to 1495, before continuing his education in Italy.
The university, founded in 1364 by King Casimir III of Poland, was one of the most important centres of learning in Central Europe. During Copernicus’s time, he studied liberal arts and encountered astronomy, mathematics, and philosophy. The institution was then commonly called the Kraków Academy or Kraków University; its modern name, Jagiellonian University, was adopted later in honour of the Jagiellonian dynasty.
Copernicus did not complete all of his later professional training at Kraków. He went on to study canon law at the University of Bologna, medicine at the University of Padua, and canon law at the University of Ferrara, where he earned a doctorate in 1503. His broad education helped him combine mathematical astronomy with his work as a church administrator and physician.
The answer can seem confusing because several Italian universities appear in accounts of his life. They were institutions he attended after Kraków, while Jagiellonian University is the Polish university associated with his early education.
