Which Pokémon was the first species created by Game Freak during development of the original games?

The story behind the answer

Rhydon was the first Pokémon species created by Game Freak during development of the original games.

Although Rhydon is Pokédex #112, its design predates the game’s final ordering. The large, armored, rhinoceros-like Pokémon helped establish the visual direction for the creatures that would populate the series.

Rhydon’s early creation is different from being the first Pokémon encountered by players or the first entry in the Pokédex. Bulbasaur occupies #001, while Pikachu became the franchise’s most recognizable mascot later through the anime and merchandise.

Rhydon also appears in the original games’ internal data and artwork, making it an important historical link to Game Freak’s earliest design work. Its Ground/Rock typing and drill-like horn became familiar features of the first generation.
