Which Pokémon was the first entry in the National Pokédex?

The story behind the answer

Bulbasaur is the first entry in the National Pokédex.

Its National Pokédex number is 001, placing it before Ivysaur and Venusaur in the evolutionary line. Bulbasaur is a dual Grass- and Poison-type Pokémon whose design combines a small amphibian body with a plant bulb on its back.

In the original Pokémon Red and Green games, Bulbasaur was one of three Pokémon the player could choose at the beginning of the adventure. The other two choices were Charmander and Squirtle. Unlike the anime’s opening episode, the games present all three as available starter options.

Bulbasaur’s name refers to its bulb and dinosaur-like appearance, although the Pokémon’s design is based on a frog. Its Japanese name is Fushigidane. Bulbasaur evolves into Ivysaur and then Venusaur, with the bulb developing into a large flowering plant. It is therefore both the first Pokédex entry and the first member of one of the original starter families.
