Pokémon Snap was the Pokémon spin-off game built around photographing Pokémon on Nintendo 64.
Developed by HAL Laboratory and published by Nintendo, Pokémon Snap was first released in Japan in March 1999. Players control Todd Snap, a photographer traveling through Pokémon Island in the Zero-One, an amphibious vehicle that moves automatically along set routes.
Instead of capturing Pokémon for battle, the player photographs them for Professor Oak. Apples, Pester Balls, and the Poké Flute can change Pokémon behavior and create better photographic opportunities. Professor Oak evaluates the pictures according to factors such as the Pokémon’s size, position, and pose.
The game featured 63 of the original 151 Pokémon in its courses. Its Nintendo 64 cartridge also supported a memorable real-world promotion: players in Japan could print photographs as stickers at Lawson stores, while a similar service operated through Blockbuster in the United States.
