Unova is the Pokémon region inspired by New York City and the surrounding area. It is the setting of Pokémon Black and White and their sequels, Pokémon Black 2 and White 2.
Unlike earlier regions, Unova was designed around a location outside Japan. Its major city, Castelia City, reflects Manhattan’s dense urban environment, while other areas draw on broader northeastern United States landscapes and architecture.
Unova introduced Generation V Pokémon and initially focused on a new regional Pokédex containing species not seen in the earlier games. The region is sometimes mistaken for Kanto, which is based on the real Kantō region of Japan, or Kalos, whose inspiration is primarily France.
