Which Pokémon region in Pokémon Black and White is based on New York City?

The story behind the answer

Unova is the Pokémon region in Pokémon Black and White based on New York City.

Unova marked a major geographic shift for the series. Earlier main-series regions were largely inspired by areas of Japan, but the fifth-generation games placed the action in a distant land modeled on New York City. Game director Junichi Masuda drew inspiration from visiting New York for the launch of Pokémon Diamond and Pearl.

Castelia City is the clearest example. Its skyscrapers, harbor, and broad urban streets reflect Manhattan, while Skyarrow Bridge evokes the Brooklyn Bridge. Unova also includes airports, amusement parks, bridges, and diverse urban and rural environments.

Unova is sometimes confused with Castelia City because Castelia is the region’s most recognizable New York-inspired location. Castelia is only one city within Unova. The region itself includes many other settlements and landscapes, including Nimbasa City, Opelucid City, and the Pokémon League.
