Pikachu has National Pokédex number 25. The Electric-type Pokémon is one of the earliest entries in the original Pokédex and became the franchise’s best-known mascot.

Pikachu evolves from Pichu when its friendship with a trainer is high, and it evolves into Raichu when exposed to a Thunder Stone. In the anime, Ash Ketchum’s Pikachu became especially famous for refusing to remain inside a Poké Ball.

Pikachu was not the player’s mandatory first Pokémon in the original Red and Green games; players chose Bulbasaur, Charmander or Squirtle. Pokémon Yellow changed that setup by giving the player Pikachu at the beginning and making it follow the player outside its Poké Ball.
