Which Pokémon generation introduced breeding through the Pokémon Day Care?

The story behind the answer

Generation II introduced Pokémon breeding through the Pokémon Day Care.

The feature debuted in Pokémon Gold and Silver, allowing compatible Pokémon left at the Day Care to produce an Egg. The Egg could hatch into a Pokémon, adding a new way to obtain species, moves, and desired characteristics.

Breeding became an important part of Pokémon strategy because offspring could inherit moves, species traits, and other characteristics from their parents. The system also gave players a way to raise Pokémon that were not directly encountered in the wild.

Generation II also introduced Pokémon Eggs, held items, Pokémon genders, and the day-and-night clock. Later games expanded breeding with abilities, inherited statistics, and additional egg-related mechanics, but the core system began in the second generation.
