Which Pokémon games were the first new-generation core titles released for Nintendo Switch?

The story behind the answer

Pokémon Sword and Shield were the first new-generation core Pokémon titles released for Nintendo Switch.

Game Freak developed the games, which launched worldwide on November 15, 2019. They introduced the Galar region, inspired by the United Kingdom, and began the eighth generation of the main Pokémon role-playing series.

Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Let’s Go, Eevee! had already appeared on Switch in 2018, but they were remakes of Pokémon Yellow. That distinction matters: Sword and Shield were the first new-generation core games built for the console.

The games introduced Dynamax and Gigantamax battles, along with the Wild Area, a large explorable zone with camera movement and changing weather. Their release marked the main series’ transition from Nintendo handheld systems to Switch.
