Which Pokémon game was released in Japan in 1998 as an enhanced version featuring Pikachu as the player's starter?

The story behind the answer

Pokémon Yellow was released in Japan in 1998 as an enhanced version featuring Pikachu as the player's starter.

Unlike Pokémon Red and Blue, Pokémon Yellow gives the player Pikachu at the beginning rather than allowing a choice among Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle. Pikachu follows the player in the overworld and reacts to the player's actions, features designed to resemble the television anime.

The game also lets players obtain all three original starter Pokémon during the adventure. Team Rocket members Jessie and James appear as character counterparts to their anime roles, further linking Yellow to the animated series.

Pokémon Yellow is not a wholly new generation. It uses the original Kanto setting and first-generation Pokémon while revising encounters, dialogue, graphics, and presentation. It was released in North America in 1999 and Europe in 2000.
