Which Pokémon game first introduced the Fairy type?

The story behind the answer

Pokémon X and Y first introduced the Fairy type.

Released worldwide in 2013 for the Nintendo 3DS, X and Y were the first main-series Pokémon games to add a new type since the Dark and Steel types appeared in Gold and Silver. Fairy was designed partly to rebalance the battle system, especially by giving Dragon-type Pokémon a new weakness.

The games also changed the types of some existing Pokémon. For example, several older species gained the Fairy type, including Clefairy, Jigglypuff, and Marill. New Fairy Pokémon such as Sylveon were introduced alongside the type.

Fairy-type moves are super effective against Dragon, Dark, and Fighting Pokémon, while Fairy Pokémon are weak to Poison and Steel attacks. The type’s arrival is therefore more than a roster addition: it changed competitive strategy and the relationships among several established types.
