Which Pokémon game composer wrote the main theme for Pokémon Red and Green?

The story behind the answer

Junichi Masuda wrote the main theme for Pokémon Red and Green.

Masuda was the composer for the first Pokémon games and created music for many of their key locations, battles, and events. The original Game Boy hardware had limited sound capabilities, so the music used compact electronic tones while still giving towns, routes, and battles distinct identities.

He also helped establish the musical language of the series through recurring motifs and energetic battle themes. Masuda later became involved in game direction and production, eventually serving in senior creative roles at Game Freak and The Pokémon Company.

The credit is sometimes confused with Ken Sugimori, who handled much of the early visual design, or Satoshi Tajiri, who created the original concept. Go Ichinose became an important Pokémon composer in later generations, but he did not write the music for the first Red and Green releases. Masuda’s early work therefore belongs directly to the franchise’s 1996 foundation.
