The Pokémon anime production council chose Pikachu as one of the franchise’s central icons.
The decision helped distinguish the anime from the first video games, where players initially choose Bulbasaur, Charmander, or Squirtle. The producers wanted the main character to begin with a different Pokémon rather than unfairly favoring one of the three game starters.
The council believed Pikachu could appeal broadly to boys, girls, and their parents. Pikachu’s small size, bright design, and expressive personality made it suitable as a recognizable mascot for television, toys, and international promotion.
Pikachu’s role in the anime differs from its role in the original games. In Pokémon Yellow, released later in Japan, Pikachu is the player’s only starter and follows the player in the overworld. The anime’s popularity helped make Pikachu the most recognizable Pokémon character.
